An Extremely Rare Spitfire with an Incredible History

The picture above is the sculpture of one of the most famous members of this Country’s aviation giants: R J Mitchell, the designer of the Supermarine Spitfire.  Mitchell, who succumbed to cancer, did not live to see his Country threatened with invasion in 1940, but the aeroplane he designed, in tandem with Sidney Camm’s  Hawker Hurricane, did more than any other to defeat the Nazi assault on our skies, and therefore our Nation.  Piloted by a band of wild spirits immortalised by Sir Winston Churchill as ‘The Few’, Mitchell’s Spitfire allowed the Royal Air Force to defeat the Luftwaffe over southern England in the anxious summer months when Hitler’s invasion massed on the far side of the Channel.

The following is just a taster of what is to be revealed in the National media later this year.

ETL is honoured to be a founding sponsor of a project to return an extremely rare mark of Spitfire to flight.  The substantial remains of the aircraft have just been recovered by a colleague of ETL's Chief Executive from Continental Europe where they have lain since World War II.  The unique stories of the pilots of this aircraft, especially the final one, have already aroused great interest with the Media.

Consequently, as this is possibly the most significant Spitfire to be found for the last 25 years, its recovery, and incredible history, will be featured in a BBC documentary later this year.  Furthermore, there will also be major print and electronic media coverage as the restoration commences and continues.  A further announcement will be made closer to the date of the BBC broadcast.  In the meantime, ETL looks forward to a long and very close association with this most significant aviation and British heritage project.
