ETL Exclusively Sponsors & Creates
first-ever Air League Scholarship Winners’ Alumni

Recognising that there will be circa 40,000 new aircraft purchased over the next 20 years as the aviation market doubles in that period, but also that there will be a global shortage of approximately one million pilots and engineers, on 6th June 2018 in St James’s Palace, London, the Air League of the UK, led by its President, Sir Roger Bone, previously President Boeing UK, will launch its first-ever Flying, Gliding and Engineering Scholarship Winners’ Alumni.  It will be a growing network of knowledge and experience that will benefit future winners, current and future members of the aviation & aerospace industries, all members of the Air League, and thereby society generally.

This Alumni is the brain-child of ETL's Chief Executive, Dr Michael Smith who, superbly supported by Clive Phillips, an EasyJet Training Captain and senior Boeing 737 & Airbus A320 Captain, and Tony Hoskins, a pilot, engineer, author, film-maker and owner of South East Aircraft Services, has given many hundreds of hours of pro-bono time to researching and then designing this Alumni. With Clive, Tony, and three other member of the Alumni Management Team Michael, as Alumni Chairman, will now roll-out a growing portfolio of services to the members, including aviation & aerospace careers advice and information, unique networking events with role model speakers and senior industry figures, and career mentoring.

Furthermore, as the Alumni establishes itself, a knowledge framework will be developed which not only provides a network of aviation & aerospace contacts, but also the provision of information on career paths into these industries, whether that be flying, operations, engineering, support functions or management. This framework will be a collaborative element working with relevant external bodies and corporate organisations as a ‘shop window’ to the industries.

Founded over 100 years ago, the Air League has been awarding annual Scholarships for many decades, mainly to young people, and often up to 70 per year.  The Air League’s mission is to continually ensure that society’s leaders appreciate and understand the vital contribution made by UK aviation and aerospace.  It achieves this in two inter-related ways.  One, by providing events & platforms to showcase British aviation and aerospace as leading contributors to UK society.  Two, by promoting a broad understanding of the benefits, opportunities and career possibilities that these industries deliver in a highly technological, innovative, entrepreneurial and wealth-creating environment that competes on a global basis.

The Scholarship Winners’ Alumni will play a significant role in supporting this mission.

ETL is extremely proud to be the sponsor & creator of this most significant initiative which will benefit the two industries concerned, the Air League of the UK and, especially, the growing number of young people involved who come from all walks of life across the whole of the UK.
